Introduction

Almost every country in the world has at least one medical students’ association/ organization to represent its Medicos.

Hence, we, though small in number and with zero medical schools/collages in our country, and are scattered around the world for medical education, feel the necessity of having our own medical students’ association.

Thus, Maldivian Medical Students’ Association (MMSA) was founded on 25th April 2001 in Katmandu, Nepal, as a result of great enthusiasm shown by the Maldivian medical students studying at the Tribhuvan University, Institute of Medicine, towards forming a Medical Students’ Association and strengthening close cooperation and friendship among Maldivian students of the health sector who are scattered around the world to pursue their education.

Objectives

As we are spread across the world, the need for building close cooperation and friendship among students of health sector is quite vivid and thus, MMSA is meant to form a support base in achieving these objectives. It will thrive further to:

1.   establish and maintain administrative and technical services that may be required to achieve such objectives.

2.   create a conductive environment for the Maldivian students in the otherwise unpredictable world outside the Maldives;

3.   provide help, advice and information to those aspiring to join the medical, nursing and paramedical student profession from the Maldives;

4.   establish understanding and cooperation with Maldivian and International health sector related bodies;

5.   encourage, facilitate and coordinate participation of Maldivian medical, nursing and paramedical students at Maldivian and International health care related seminars, meetings, and workshops, which are relevant to Maldives;

6.   disseminate information and provide assistance in the field of health, to improve public awareness on all matters of health;

7.   assist the Government of Maldives in their efforts to disseminate health information, eradicate or control epidemic, endemic and other diseases;

8.   establish mutually beneficial relationship with Maldivian and International establishments with interests similar to this Association;

9.   Organize social gatherings from time to time so as to improve the interaction among members and to foster Nationalism; and

10.  act as a support base for Maldivian students as far as possible.
